The headteacher of Woodlands First and Middle school joined the school after the designs for the new building had been finalised, too late for his knowledge of children's needs to have any significant impact. In addition, changes to the PFI agreement would have been time consuming, expensive and bureaucratic. Despite the "missed opportunity", the new facilities at the school, whose students have severe and complex learning difficulties, are impressive.
